CEPSA Chimie Montréal s.e.c
is the largest and the only PTA manufacturing facility
in Canada with an annual capacity of 600,000 Mts. and
one of the three merchant PTA producers in North America.
ABOUT PTA
Purified terephthalic acid, or PTA,
is an inert, stable solid
in the form of fine, white crystalline powder
obtained from a series of chemical conversions
from raw petroleum.
PTA is produced by oxidation of p-xylene,
a petroleum by-product, using
acetic acid and catalysts.
The resulting product appears
as a crystalline substance,
which is then filtered, purified, dried and stored.
The main equipment used to produce PTA includes
reactors, pumps, heat exchangers, crystallizers, agitators
and storage tanks.
PTA is used to produce PET,
a polymer obtained through the polycondensation of
terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
PET is considered to be a type of refined petroleum.
When rapidly chilled to very low temperatures,
it becomes an amorphous, transparent substance
which is then pressed, cooled and cut into pellets.
It is then used to manufacture
a variety of products we use every day, such as
recyclable bottles, bank cards,
stuffing material for cushions, textile fibres and
oven-safe containers.
