BASF
will increase its global capacities for
BDO (1,4-Butanediol) and
PTMEG (Polytetramethylene ether glycol)
within the two coming years.
Future production capacity
BASF's global capacities incraseses for BDO and PTMEG
(metric tons per year)
Product/Capacity Current New
BDO 535,000 650,000
PTMEG 250,000 350,000
With respect to PTMEG, BASF has announced capacity increase
from 185,000 to 250,000 metric tons per year in August 2012.
BASF continuously expands its production capacities by
implementing measures to
boost efficiency and improve infrastructure.
These measurs include investments to incresase capacity for
* BDO's operations at BASF's Geismar, Louisiana, USA site and for
* PTMEG operations at Caojing, China site.
About BDO and its derivatives
- BDO and its derivatives are used for producing
plastics, solvents, electronic chemicals and elastic fibers.
- The starting material for the production of conventional BDO
natural gas, butane, butadiene and propylene.
- For 70 years, BASF has been manufacturing BDO at
Ludwigshafen, Germany, Verbund site
by means of Reppe Process.
- This acetylene-based process, which is named after its inventor
Walter Reppe, a chemist with BASF,
features higher efficiency than other process.
- Other BASF sites producing BDO and PTMEG are
* USA, Louisiana, Geismar
* Japan, Chiba
* Malaysia, Kuantan
* China, Caojing
* Korea, Ulsan
